Concentric and Eccentric Time-Under-Tension during Strengthening Exercises: Validity and Reliability of Stretch-Sensor Recordings from an Elastic Exercise-Band

Key finding: The stretch-sensor matched video analysis with r > 0.99 correlation for total, single-repetition, and contraction-phase-specific time-under-tension — while reducing analysis time from 17 minutes to 55 seconds.

This is the foundational validation paper. Every subsequent study that used Bandcizer as a measurement instrument was built on the validity and reliability established here.

Key finding: Patients completed their reps but cut time under tension by 21–47% below prescription. They thought they were compliant. The sensor showed they weren't.

An independent group chose Bandcizer for a 25-week longitudinal study. That's not a courtesy citation — that's a measurement tool decision by researchers who evaluated their options.

The measurement method

Bandcizer uses capacitive measurement to detect band deformation — how much the resistance band stretches — at 20 times per second. This is a direct physical measurement, not motion tracking. A wrist-worn accelerometer detects that you moved your arm; Bandcizer measures what your resistance band did.

The capacitive measurement principle is unchanged from the hardware used in all 12 studies. Six generations of software analysis. Same sensor physics. The measurement method is protected by US Patent 9,561,400.

12 studies across 8 clinical areas

Measurement validation, knee, shoulder, hip, geriatric inpatients, older adult exercise, workplace, and adolescent populations. This isn't a single-use-case tool.

Independent research groups

Aalborg University, Bispebjerg Hospital (Copenhagen), University of Queensland. They chose Bandcizer for their study designs. They weren't contracted to validate it.

The measurement hasn't changed

The hardware that generated the data in these studies is the same hardware in the sensors available today.
